Siderean’s Relational Navigation Solution Achieves Milestone with Sub-Second Response Time using Elsevier Content

Siderean Software, the leading provider of relational navigation solutions, today announced that the company has exceeded 1 billion resource description framework (RDF) relations in a pilot deployment for Elsevier, the world’s largest publisher of scientific and technical research. Siderean achieved this industry-first milestone during a proof-of-concept evaluation using Siderean’s Seamark Navigator information access platform. Relations, or triples, refer to metadata statements generated through the Semantic Web specification RDF that, for the first time, can be analyzed and sorted on a massive scale using Siderean’s relational navigation technology. Relational navigation, which leapfrogs previous navigation approaches, enables users to gain greater access to and control over search results from disparate enterprise and Web-based information sources by intuitively grouping metadata facets together. As a result, searchers using sites powered by Siderean experience an easy-to-use navigational interface that enables them to quickly find information that is relevant to them.

During the pilot, Siderean’s relational navigation solution delivered search results by navigating over 1 billion relations with sub-second response time. Relational navigation uses an RDF-based information architecture to enable users to pivot across subjects within search results instead of simply drilling down through query results. This delivers unprecedented transparency to the process, allowing users to uncover the relationships within and across the data regardless of format or original source.

RDF is a Semantic Web specification that uses XML as an interchange syntax, providing a lightweight ontology system to support the exchange of knowledge on the Web. RDF statements describe a resource and its properties, and the values of those properties are often referred to as triples. RDF triples consist of a subject, predicate and object which correspond to a resource, a property and a property value. Siderean’s Seamark Navigator information access platform uses a scalable RDF store in conjunction with a patented relational navigation engine to intuitively group metadata facets. As a result, Siderean delivers the industry’s most personalized and intuitive search results, enabling users to illuminate previously unknown relationships between disparate data sets.
